Maniac by Nina Auril

🌟🌟🌟 out of 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
BLURB
The Maniac
Things I should have watched out for:
The redhead with her face buried in her phone.
The pixie who made me feel more alive than the speeding blue Shelby underneath me.
The girl more intense than the music and crowds I surround myself with.
The cure to all the demons from my past.
The one with the boyfriend who loves her.
But I didn’t, and now she has to watch me one more time. In a race for my life, and hers.

The Cure
Things I should have seen coming:
The stupid red balloon.
The road all my wishes led me down.
The 6ft hulk with the easy smile.
The maniac who rages both on the track and off it.
The one who doesn’t care that I have a boyfriend who loves me.
But I didn’t, and now I have to watch him one more time. In a race for his life, and mine.

I thought that the author set up the story really well. The issues that both Alex and Quinn faced over the course of the book were hinted at well beforehand so there were no problems that just appeared. I appreciated the forethought but I would have rather had the book focus on the relationship between Alex and Quinn. I would have taken out the issue that they deal with at the end relating to Alex's hobby. I found their interactions far more interesting than any other issue in the book. This book actually reminds me of Thoughtless by S. C. Stephens but with a twist. While I loved Alex, I did not care much for Quinn's boyfriend Erik. He seemed like a real jerk that didn't care about anyone but himself. What kind of boyfriend doesn't spend time with his girlfriend and support her when she is having a hard time.
Alex was actually my favorite character in this book! At first, I thought that he was just a bit of a player but that changed quickly when I saw how he acted towards Quinn. He was such a spaz the first time that he attempted to talk to her that I found him endearing right away. That and he has a good reason for his actions and choices. I understood why he was a bit of a player but my heart broke for him when I found out why. The author doesn't go into much depth with his past but it is enough to understand that he has dealt with trauma in his past. That is the reason why I was so angry at Quinn for a good portion of the book. I could understand where she was coming from regarding Alex but at the same time it felt like she had her head stuck so far up her butt that she couldn't see that she was making horrible choices. I liked her well enough as a character but thought that she was naive and trying so hard not to turn into her father that she made bad choices. The other character that I loved was her best friend Noah. He was outspoken, blunt, and would give the shirt off of his back to someone that he cared for. He was also hilarious and I enjoyed some of the interaction between him and Alex. They were both really funny characters.
I keep coming back to one question though. Why is the book titled Maniac? I don't see Alex as a maniac at all so it can't be him. The blurb makes it seem like it is but I don't agree so it bugs me.
